The Vines

Frontenac

The newcomer, originating from the hybridization program at the University of Minnesota. A cross between landot 4511 and V Riparia 89. One of the most productive at the lowest cost. Gives the best wines and rosés. Late maturity limits its cultivation to the best sites in southern Québec.

Wine Style
Fine and complex wine, lots of body, very high in alcohol, beautiful color and aromas of black cherries and sometimes chocolate.

Cold Hardiness
It resists our winter temperature up to -36 degrees C.

Sabrevois

The best red hybrid of Elmer Swenson. The easiest to cultivate, good cold resistance even unprotected. Tolerates poorly drained soils better than others. However, it does not produce well in dry or poor soil. Bunches are variable in shape and rather small. Grape maturity is early to mid-season with a sugar level of 20 to 22 brix.

Wine Style
Wine is well-colored, well balanced and very vinifera like.

Cold Hardiness
It resists our winter temperature up to -38 degrees C.

Seyval Blanc

French hybrid (Seyve Villard 5-276) the oldest varietal in Québec. Its high bud fertility and large bunches makes it well suited for mounting. Maturity is reached by end of September in the southern part of Québec. The bunches do not all ripen at the same time.

Wine Style
Typically it produces a perfumed dry white wine.

Cold Hardiness
It resists our winter temperature up to -24 degrees C.

Frontenac Gris

It is a fact color mutation found on the mother Frontenac vine (then called MN1047) in the University’s collection at Excelsior Minnesota. It is culturally identical to the original red Frontenac, and can be told from the original when the grapes begin to color bronze rather than red. Frontenac Gris has the same desirable growth characteristics of Frontenac. Good vigor, reliable hardiness and ability to bear heavily. It has the same weakness as well. It can be complex to vinify, and susceptibility to Phylloxera and Anthracnose.

Wine Style
When made with skin time, it produces a light rosé or blush, with apricot and peach flavors. When made as a white, it is crisp and clean with aromas of tropical fruits (especially pineapple) and honey. It has also been used to make a good ice-type wine wherein the color is more red and the flavor quite intensely cherry.

Cold Hardiness
It resists our winter temperature up to -36 degrees C.

Frontenac Blanc

It is derived from the mutation of color found on the Frontenac and Frontenac Gris vines. It is less vigorous and with a quicker maturity compared to the Frontenac.

Wine Style
A very versatile wine. More complex and thinner than the Frontenac Gris. Aromas of tropical fruit, pear, peach and passion fruit. A white wine with a very intense lemon yellow color. Because of its high acidity, it is a good candidate for a late harvest or ice wine.

Cold Hardiness
It resists our winter temperature up to -36 degrees C.

Pionnier

The Pionnier is a hybridized vine by Elmer Swenson in the United States. The name Pionnier is used only in Québec, has never been formalized.

Wine Style
Produces good rosé wines, gives a good juice with serviceberry and strawberry aromas. It is low in acidity. It lacks tannin and structure.

Cold Hardiness
It resists our winter temperature up to -35 degrees C.

Petite Pearl

The best red hybrid from Minnesota University. Does not need winter protection.

Wine Style
Produces an excellent red wine with a PH of 3.5, a total acidity of 7 gr. and brix between 22 to 24 degrees. This varital is ideal for our Québec climate.

Cold Hardiness
It resists our winter temperature up to -36 degrees C.
